How long does everyone age their castor bags?....Can they be put in a dehydrator and then let them age? If not, what temp is good and how long?.....Do you soak them in anything before you dry and age? I see alot of the top beaver lure companies' lures are dark brown...Can you take fresh castor sac and seperate the membrane from the castor and age that?...or Take the latter and not age...just add my other ingredients? Ive tried to let the sacks age like a week or two and ground them up...but it smelled like it was burnt...I'm pretty sure i used enough glycerin for lube....It just smells like burrnt castor sac....Should i just cut it up with scissors as fine as i can and go with that?

Dear Friend, There are several ways to process / prepare castor. For most practical purposes in home lure making semi-dry castor works fine. Simply remove the castors from the beaver carcass, trim off the membrane and hang in a cool dry place for a few weeks to a month. Regards

Dear Friend, In the next several posts I will attempt to give a few ideas for preparing castor.......Green...air dry for 2~3 days then chop and gring with enough glycerin to make a paste....semi~dry and dry castor can be done the same way........Regards

Dear Friend, Bone dry {black in color} can be processesd a couple different ways......you can pulverize it into a powder and tincture it out........simply use the powder.........soak in a tincturing solvent........or soak in some red wine for a while and make a unique but very effective odor. Regards

Dear Friend, you can semi~dry the castor and the cut the end off and sqeeze out or let the castor oil drip out and use just the oil....then chop and grind the castor sack with glycerin...........you can take semi~dry or dry castor and soak it in alcohol, whole or chopped and use the tincture and then grind the sacks for use also. All the ideas mentioned will all give you a castor odor with different aromas......It all depends on what you want to try and achieve. Regards

Definately gonna have to try the wine....Do you seperate male/female....Some dry a reddish and others don't...Those seem to smell differently....One better than the other...Big Sky Lure & Dobbins Beaver Plus seemed to have a reddish tint....

1 if you use fresh castor , wouldnt you be using something that smells more like a beaver? 2. if you use aged castor wouldnt this produce a different odor that whatever will not recognize ?

Dear Mr. Mole, I certainly agree that fresh castor gland smells more like a beaver and would definitely be of more value as an attractor to beaver than aged castor, especially if a some sac oil is added..:...Aged castor (barkstone) would be better utilized as an ingredient in a cat or canine lure. Papabear. I has dry castor from last year and dry castor from this year. I wanna grind them up. My question is. Should i keep last years castor separate from this years castor? Or mix it all together? I mainly use it for my castor mound sets. Thanks for reading Dave

I am not papa Bear but just something to think about. If you grind both seasons of castor and keep them separate you have two different beaver smells. If you mix them you now have one beaver smell. Different , yes but only one. Good Luck

Dear Mr. Trapperbill, you can use alcohol when grinding, but I reccomend mixing glycerin 50/50 with 100 proof vodka or everclear if you have access to it. While a high proof alcohol certainly makes a good antifreeze, and gives lift to the lure odor, it has a high volatility causing it to evaporate quicker during milder weather. When mixed with glycerin the glycerine stabilizes and slows the rate in which the alcohol evaporates allowing the odor to disperse longer.......During periods of extremely cold weather merely add more vodka than glycerin. Regards

Dear Mr. Redneck, How you store your castor would depend on its intended use. Fresh castor would serve well for beaver lure while a more aged castor would be well used in K9, coon and cat concoctions.......All the ways you mentioned are fine....but until processed, keep an eye open for mold. Regards

Hey Papabear, why don't recommend aged castor for beaver lure...From what i can tell, big sky and dobbins look like the same thing i'm trying to mix up...I just haven't been able to get the correct ingredients to get their exact smell....Still not sure on how their getting the reddish tint....In my opinion, big sky beaver lure and dobbins beaver plus are the best on the market...i use dobbins early in the season "nov-dec" and Big sky "jan-Apr"...I use poplar bud oil for my change up on same site..Dobbins seems to bring all sizes and big sky catches the biggins...43 so far..I've been lucky so far, only 8 have been large or smaller...my goal this year was 105 beaver. Not sure I'm gonna make it cause I've been fighting a lot of ice...

Dear Trapperbill, Beaver don't secrete aged castorium when marking there territory! I'm convinced that by using fresh ground castor it represents a more true beaver odor and invokes an immediate territorial or association response depending on where the castor you use came from...........the red tint in the lures you mention could come from a variety of ingredients....one being red wine.......castor tinctured/ soaked in red wine creates a different but intriguing odor that is attractive to beaver. Regards
