You woulda been smiling if you had your reds there. ;D ;D I just sold 15 select reds for $50 each to a friend's friend who wants a jacket made. Hopefully I didn't lowball myself outta some winter fox. If so, I'll just hit Rockwood for $75 average on remainders in a couple of weeks :>0

Many of you that are cheering the higher pricees being paid may regret it if it bring about many of the things out that happened during the last fur boom.As it is right now the high gas prices and the cost of operating a line will most likely keep the ones out of the game that only care about money ,but I for one dont want to see the prices go much higher.

Some are to young to remember herm. Personally I already had the most competition I've had in many, many years and never trapped some of my best locations. It's great to see people out there don't get me wrong but this year was just crazy for me. People setting on top of each other... high prices tend to bring people out that would never be out there otherwise. Oh well... I have no problem with the competition just want them to have the respect and joy of trapping that the rest of do...

I remember the fur boom of the 80's; $ 80 dollar reds, 40 dollar coons. Also can remember $ 250 female fisher at the early Foothills sales. Those high prices did bring people out of the woodwork. Sadly a few of them caused big problems that brought about a lot of the restrictions we have today. I saw a lot of new faces at the sale yesterday and I had to wonder how many were members of NYSTA, the NTA, FTA, or any trapping organization. I very much resent our gas prices, state tax on gas, and our corrupt government at all levels; town, state, and federal. They have caused me to severely draw back on my trapline distances. I can only dream of the long lines I would love to run.

Back in the fur boom days not all the problems were caused by trappers that were in it for the money. The number one furbearer that the money people were after was the coon. Many of these problems were caused by hunters.Jack lighting all over the place up and down the roads, cutting den trees on lands they did not own and more.Things got so bad in Western,NY with trespassing, stealing of dogs, etc, that a law was passed where out of state hunters could not hunt coon for the first 30 days of the season. We all got through it the last time more or less ok.I dont think that would be the case today and the current economic conditions that are ineffect in our state sure wouldnt help.

Even if reds reach the 70 mark, it won't come close to comparing to the fur boom. Back then, the overall work ethic was stronger, the gas was ALOT cheaper, land was easier to access and 70.00 went WAY further than it does today! I am only surmising this, as I was wearing pull-ups then!!! . Lol There has Been a couple trappers pop up near me over the last couple years. They start out all full of P&V then after a week or two, they realize that to be successful, it takes a strong commitment, alot of land and alot of gas. They all fizzle out..... I worry more about the fox callers that see eye balls in my traps during the night, rather than other trappers. I actually enjoy other trappers in the area. Gives me someone to visit with... Although I'm not a big water guy, where most of the problems seem to happen....

Yeah high prices means time to get hounds, you trepass on posted ground and claim your dogs can't read!

Although I'm not a big water guy, where most of the problems seem to happen.... I had two fox stolen this year, both by callers at night. Have seen more predator callers out on state land this fall and winter than every other year combined. It's a new factor to deal with... guys at night with lights, specifically drawn to the same locations we are setting for canines.

Yeah high prices means time to get hounds, you trepass on posted ground and claim your dogs can't read! Whether the dogs can read or not,we humans can not always follow the dogs and trespass. This is one case where dogs have more rights than people. If hunters that continue to try to take advantage of this keep it up as a very few of them seem to be doing,we may see this change.

Hope we do see it change, sick and tired of people crusing the neighbor hood casting there dogs on the road on private ground and then driving to the other side of the block were they have permission. No regard for private property

AJ,The ones casting hounds like the ones you discribe, and I too am aware that it goes on, will ruin it for all the rest.In fact that type of hunter is most likely the biggest concern the houndsman are facing in our state right now. They should be reported to the DEC.Althow what they might be doing might technically not be illegal,if the DEC gets enough complants about them they will trip up sooner or later and it would be doing everyone a favor it this type were removed from the field.

Mark coyotes have to be high------I didn't catch squat------every time I catch a lot of something the market tanks----if I have a poor catch they have to be worth a million!!!! It's a good time to be a trapper!---Tom
