After reading a bunch of posts about the rust-o-leum dip...I tried it. I used to spray paint my conis but was never happy with the hit & miss coverage. I tried it on some 160's 1 quart rust-oleum rusty metal primer 1 quart rust-oleum flat black 1 quart acetone Mixed the three in an old dish pan and dipped away. Added acetone on occasion to keep the mixture thin when done, poured remaining mixture in a new paint can and sealed it tight Bought all the stuff at Home Depot Great coverage (all the tight spots) and an even thin coat Will do the rest of my conis this way. They come out a chocolate brown color. My understanding is that the unused mixture sealed in the new paint can will last until next season with no problem Give it a try....I did and was happy with the results Thanks to Yoteguts for his wisdom Tom BEFORE AFTER

Good coverage, dries fast and in colors that blend very well in many situations. Try the flat brown also .

Looks very good Tom. Be sure and keep that can out of direct sunlight as it will build up pressure. This color is very camo here. I do my DP's in it and if I don't have a catch I can't hardly find them.
I like it much better than speed dip. No tacky clumps.

They look great Tom. Just got my 220s out of the vinegar bath and the car wash. I might get to do them next weekend. I have the leather brown to try. Now that Yoteguts mentioned them, I might as well do my dp's too.

If you set your DP's first you don't have to clean the triggers off.

Yoteguts is the King of Dips.....uh....I mean King Dipper Andy....I think it would do a good job on your 220's Just find a container a little bigger than the 220's for dipping but make sure it will hold up against the acetone. I am curious how it holds up on your traps...they were pretty rusty before the vinegar bath Rob.....tell us how many traps you have done on a batch of the mix (need to know the batch size too)

I run a 3 gallon mix and just add some paint or acetone every once in a while. I've been running the same container for two years now. Mine got knocked over early last year and had to mix new last year. I dip my 55 dp's every year and my 4 dozen 110's every other year. I have 330's that I dipped 3 years ago that are still looking good. That said I don't do a lot of beaver trapping.
It goes a long ways if you keep adding acetone and a quart of paint here and there. This year I dipped some #11's as well. They turned out great also.

You can also substitute another color in place of the black such as green, white, grey, etc to match a specific need

going to give this a try..spraying with rust-o-leum spraypaint can get expensive and iv noticed that it doesnt get all of the nooks and cranys and only lasts a year or two tops for me..great thread cant wait to get started on the conis..foot traps all finished

Fortunately, many have done this before me and workrd out the kinks. Lucky to know good guys like Yoteguts who are willing to share and help us first timers

Two things. Be sure and free up all your swivels after the paint dries. I always store the paint where it won't freeze.Better safe than sorry I guess.

Just got done doing my conies. They look fantastic. Thanks for the great tip.
Instead of using a dish pan I used a large aluminum foil baking tin. Fold it up and discard.
Thanks.

I did this method as well. Due to the smell I regret doing it eight days before the season starts. How soon will the smell linger. Should I do something else before I dip them in the wax. You definately can't beat the convenience, cost, and overall appearance. Got a full gallon for next year.

I left mine outside for 5 days and were good to go.
I just painted 3 more the other day.
I also painted all of my quick links for my foot holds. I was worried about the smell. I left them outside for 2 days. I brought them into the basement to let them dry faster. They seem to be ok. But I do not have the nose of a canine.
