251 isn't an ingredient... believe it was named after his record season catch number at that point in time... but been known to be wrong from a time or two... soooo you may want to verify that... grey matter's not what it use to be... jim

I'm sure he did Jim, I've just got images or sporks, mashed potatoes and secret spices in my head from Bill.

well you never know... bill may of inherited a sporkin spice or two from him ... he liked the spring holes ... he use to have a simple post set, that he could keep moving the trap up the post as the snow came or kept building up ... that he would make while standing in the brook or spring run, that he was trapping.... jim

lew eckhart from barryville... he's passed now... but was one heck of a spring hole trapper... used dirt sets also in fall....
trapped by the delaware river... ten mile river and made it up as far as the east and west branches of the neversink ... setting spring runs... had a driver/ partner.... grandpa barnes... old man barnes would drop him off when he went in an go turn around and come back to pick him up...jim

When I turned 16 and got my drivers license,I drove to Barryville and took instructions fron Lew.I caught a ton of fox and coon using his methods along spring runs. He also ran the Delaware up to Callicoon trapping rats, mink and beaver.

In Eckhart's trapping supplie catalog (an older issue) it says that 251 is a carrier agent, but doesn't say what ingredient 251 is. his record catch was 305 foxes in 1952

Dear Friends, If I remember correctly, Lou Ekhart was a perfume chemist as told to me in a conversation with Johnny Thorpe discussing various lure ingredients. Im assuming the 251 was a compound that he formulated. John also showed me a bottle of lure he obtained from Mr Ekhart which contained a lure compounded by some sorta of burner method and smelled like nothing ive never smelled before. At that time John was trying to duplicate the odor. Regards

I have read a couple articles by Eckhart that were darn good. I have looked for his written methods a long time to add to my collection but have not found them yet.
If anyone has a lead where I can learn more about Lew or find his methods please give me a shout. Thanks
Scott

The catalog that I have dosen't list any lures made called 305, everything is listed 251. it says back then that he also sold mast scents,o.l. butcher's and Hawbaker's lures.also said that he would add 251 to any of his famous lures for 75 cents

Has anybody ever tried a burner system ?

Post by jsevering on Jan 6, 2013 20:22:35 GMT -5
i have never tried it... but heard the local stories of lew using it, the burner.. on the delaware when the wind currents were right over the years.. to try and draw the fox running the pa side to the ny side... maybe mikemason being a student of lews has tried it? might want to try and pm him.
scott... a few years back i talking to scott mayer about grampa barnes over a cup of coffee... being good freinds and pal'ing with lew... believe scott and joe van houten went and visited mr. barnes when he was still alive, to find out more about mr. eckhart... if i remember right, think they even left with a gifted bottle of eckhart lure, from mr. barnes, you might want to try joe for some information or a lead or two.... know he did a lot of research on mr. eckhart.... jim

Johnny Thorpe says in his lure video that the lure Eckhart used in his burner system contained frankincense and myrrh.

Dear Friend, I must of missed something....I was under the impression that the lure was made by using some sort of burner system. Guess I should of paid better attention. Regards

I got a lead from I think Thorpe or your president and called joe van houten last summer. Had a nice talk for several minutes. He gave a name of a guy that collected books. I called that number a lot of times and got no answer.. Thanks for the lead.
