Can you guys explain this set to me? IMO the basic theory is that a K-9 will step in the low spot when investigating a dirt hole. I think it's highly over rated. Put something down a deep hole and properly bed your trap and your results will speak for themselves

Very effective set for me in late winter. Much easier to keep the trap working.Rain will put it out of business though.Deep step downs or trench sets are a staple on my line after freeze up.They work great here.

Anywhere from 3" to 9" or so. This was a post hole set remade into a deep step down.Caught 3 yotes. Shallow step down.Caught 2 yotes. Deep trench.Caught 5 yotes and a fox.

Peat and calcium chloride with a top dressing of dry dirt.

Thanks . You brush them off of snow quite often ? I have trouble with this set ,snow and getting worked from the back or the high sides of the trench... Maybe I dont use something good enough in the hole?Does the calcium keep dirt showing even with light snow?Have any pics before catch of the set in snow?

Nope no pics of that.I try to set windswept areas if at all possible.I won't sweep the snow unless it's deep or crusted. Are you using urine at this set?

In the pictures the trap seems close to the hole? like 4 to 5 inches away. Is that correct? .
Aj...... Why dont you like this set?

Generally i chip them out with a pulaski. Next season I plan on pre digging some.Try not using urine or gland lure at the set.Just a bait and/or a food lure.Get it right on location. Don't make them hunt for the smell.I vary the length of the trench some 6" to the trap some 12". Mix and match.

Thanks.Guilty of both urine and gland. Sometimes the problems seem so hard but the answer is so obvious .Frustrating. Glad you dropped by Nytrappers tonite. I hope you catch the snot out of the yotes and coon this fall.

Thank you. When using urine or gland on the deep trench if they pull that behind the set crap on you. Blend another trap in on the backside of your backing.Gettem
I like it here as there are many trappers on here that have forgotten more about trapping than I know.Knowledge, you can never get enough.

Aj...... Why dont you like this set? Just think it's over rated. Every see were a K-9 worked at a set were the trap is frozen in? Ever watch them work a set on a trail cam? Everybody has there own style. I try and keep mine simple.

Hey Rob...show a couple of the truckload shots He's got tough conditions out there and is a consistent big producer on the yote line Take note of his use of cornerposts in the wide open spaces

I like the stepdown alot, learned it from the Leggetts... Great fox set.. I modified it to what I call the "modified step down / dirthole set." It's simple to construct and works excellent all season, especially during the late season.. I have posted the construction of it on here a couple times..
Don't know if this set is any better than any other K9 set, but it's simple to construct and looks natural.

I learned it from Vauhn Tingley...of (tingley's northland) When he taught it to me...he emphasized that it eliminates the need for any other type guiding

Easy set to keep working in frozen conditions and no guiding needed. If he wants to see what that sweet smelling thing is in the hole he must step down to look. Foot dead center in the low spot almost every time.Nothing says " hey come and check this out" like a big ole pile of black dirt on the snow. Here you go Tom. Vacation weeks catch.Mostly trench sets.Small line maybe 10 miles long.Never got above 10 degrees all week.

Yoteguts. When you say easy set to keep working in frozen weather. How do you do it? Seems like if it rained durning the day, the trench would fill up with water and when it froze at night, the set would freeze over.

Water will put it out of business.I'm talking frozen bitter cold conditions.I run the trap completely in peat with a top dressing of dry dirt.
