 Canine 2009
« Thread Started on Nov 2, 2009, 12:20pm »

Took some time off work to do a little trapping, some bowhunting, and some of those things you just do to get ready for winter (wood, wood, wood). Anyways, Cheryl (cabingirl) and I headed out Sunday and decided to concentrate on putting a dozen sets at just a couple farms for this week. We made a total of 24 sets between the two farms, putting in 2-3 sets at 3-4 key locations on each farm. We figured this would speed things up as it's been so wet that taking the truck on the farm properties was out of the question, so we would be doing it all on foot and wanted some time for other things, and she still had to work most of the week.

This is only Cheryl's second year trapping, and she put in half the sets that were made. She caught her first coyote the very next day, and took 2 of the largest fox we caught that week. I'm very proud of the way she has taken to this wonderful past time. Total for the week was;

15 Red Fox
2 Coyote
2 Coons
1 Possum
1 Skunk

We also had two fox torn up by coyotes (we took the 2 coyotes from the same field that same night that they did this), had the usual misses and worked sets, couple days of excessive rain where all sets had to be remade, etc. But all in all it was a nice week! A few pics from the week;

Thanks for looking! I hope you all are having success, and most of all a good time!

:)....I live just up the road from it, yep, we rat and mink trap that creek/swamp. Rat pop has been way down since that drought two years ago, see only one house so far on the swamp. Got a couple beaver colonies this year also that we're going after over there.

Yes, we should do that sometime. Lot of wood duck in the area, have them on my own pond a few mornings each week.

You must have a cabin in Centerville? I grew up in Allegany County. I trapped the Bolivar, Richburg Little Genesee area for several years as a teenager. I have went back a couple times in the past few years to do some water trapping and visit family. It's cool to walk the same streams that I did when I was 11... They seemed a lot bigger back then........

So after running a week long line I had decided that this past weekend I would concentrate on the bowhunting. Cheryl though decided to head out on Saturday alone and put out some sets. She got 11 sets in on Saturday and another three on Sunday. She had a couple days off work so she ran for a few days pulling most on Tuesday and a few yesterday. Only her second time trapping without me along, she got herself 1 coon and 4 nice reds. She did the dispatches and the skinning and putting up, sounds like a trapper to me..........

Coon on Sunday (shameless plug for NightOwl lures.... ;))

Here's a shot of each of the 4 fox she got (takes better pics than I do)

In the fur shed (told her to hurry, just got home from work and I was hungry... ;D)

Way to go Cheryl...my wife loves fur and she will go with me to check the line out back. I have never trapped since I met her 7years ago. She has NO problems with me fishing, hunting or trapping. I am a lucky man I figure ;D
