The other day i caught my second fox. I first thought it was a red. I show the picture to another former trapper i know, once looking at the picture he said that the fox was a red grey cross. Has anyone else caught a cross like this?

There is no such animal. The red fox (vulpes vulpes)and the gray fox(Urocyon cinereoargenteus) are from different genus' which makes them incapable of crossbreeding. Now there is a cross fox, which is a color varation of th red fox, generally occuring with a greater consistancy the further north you go. When the animal is skinned and turned fur side out, it almost looks as if there is a cross on the foxes back across the shoulder region. Cross fox generall sell for 1 1/2 to 2 times the value of a red fox. Lets see a picture!!

I have caught grey fox that have had a little more red in them than usual. This could be confused for the creature you are suggesting, but it is a grey fox. As Wayne said they can not interbreed.

I'm sure this is true on a true cross fox like seen further north......but if King's caught what I think he's caught.....it'll grade as a bastard fox. You'll sell it for less than a normal colored red. Best thing to do is find somebody looking for an oddball as a wall hanging. A picture would be great.....maybe you did catch a true cross fox King, but I've never seen one from our neck of the woods.
King, I sent you a PM
Rick.

I used to live in the same town he does and years ago (early 1980's) I know that there were a few wild silver fox running around there. So it's definatly possible for a silver or cross fox to be in the area since it's genetic.

Yesterday i took the furs to Joe Fonzi in Gasport. He is the only furbuyer in the area actually buying furs this year because of the prices.
